(7 June 2009) Sixty individuals and seven relay teams showed up this morning at the United Seamen’s Service Center beach (formerly called the USO) in Piti for the third and final race in the annual GTA Teleguam Sprint Triathlon Series. Sporadic rain showers the previous day were absent and the bright, hot sun promised to make the race challenging for everyone.

After a quick rundown of the course, the siren blared and the racers were off. Thrashing arms and legs soon had the relatively calm waters of the USO churning.

The stronger swimmers immediaely broke to the front with Devon Bathurst, David Brennan and relay swimmer Michelle Ysrael trading leads. Ysrael rounded the buoy and created some space before making the final push for shore. A minute back in the chase pack was Cameron O'Neal, Sarah Mutter and relay swimmer Paul Fugligni.

Once the bike portion commenced it was all about O'Neal as he quickly erased any deficit he had coming out of the swim. Meanwhile, Jennifer Roberts, the top female participant in the first two races, intentionally held back on

on the swim. Her goal this race - to help an anxious novice friend get through the swim, and through her first triathlon. She would eventually exit the water in last place.

Back on the race course, O'Neal made an emphatic statement reaching T2 with a 3-1/2 minute margin over his nearest competitor. He finished first overall with a time of 1:07:32. Christian Washington put in the day's fastest 5k (20:48) and wound up in second with a time of 1:10:16. Completing the top 3 mens spots was Benjamin Dillon. His time was 1:10:58.

With Jennifer Roberts out of the picture, the female race was dominated by Chiyo Lombard. A force in Guam's cycling scene, Lombard clocked the fifth fastest bike split on her way to first place (10th overall). Her finishing time was 1:16:07. Devon Bathurst crossed the line in 1:21:12 for second place female. Rachael Mutter rounded out the women's podium places with a time of 1:22:41.

After a tally of the points garnered during the entire GTA Teleguam Sprint Triathlon Series, Cameron O'Neal and Jennifer Roberts emerged as the overall winners.
